Diving in Playa del Carmen: reefs and bull sharks

The reefs off Playa del Carmen have something Cancun's do not: relief. Huge barrel sponges, sea fans swaying with the current and low walls that create shelters where morays and lobsters hide.

Gentle currents turn every dive into one continuous glide, never swimming against anything. And because Playa del Carmen sits in the middle of the Riviera Maya, it is the perfect base if you are staying between Puerto Morelos and Tulum.

Bull sharks: November to March

Every winter, pregnant female bull sharks move inshore off Playa del Carmen. It is a documented seasonal phenomenon and one of the reasons divers travel here specifically between November and March.

We offer two formats. Natural observation uses no bait: the group positions on the sand, still and in line, while the sharks circle. Open Water required.

The controlled feeding dive is deeper, with a specialist feeder and strict protocol. It allows a much closer encounter and requires Advanced plus good buoyancy control.

If it is your first time with sharks, start with the observation dive.

The perfect base for combining

Playa del Carmen is the easiest starting point if you want to combine sea and cenote in the same trip. The Riviera Maya cenotes — Dos Ojos, The Pit, Zapote — are under an hour away, and the reefs launch from the town itself.

The combination we recommend most: reef on day one to dial in buoyancy and weighting, cenote on day two. In that order, because the cenote is far more enjoyable once your control is sharp.
