Diving and snorkelling in Cabo Pulmo, the World's Aquarium

5.0★ · 242 Google reviews

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez 'the aquarium of the world'. Cabo Pulmo is where you can check that claim: a protected reef where marine life came back in force and the schools form walls dense enough to block the sun.

Why Cabo Pulmo is unlike anywhere else

Cabo Pulmo is not just another pretty reef. It is the best-documented marine recovery in the Americas, and that is why divers cross the country to see it.

The reef sits off a village of some twenty families in the municipality of Los Cabos, between La Paz and San Jose del Cabo. It was declared a National Park in 1995, covering 7,111 hectares of which 99% is marine, according to CONANP's official record. Ten years later, in 2005, UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List as part of the 'Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California'.

What happened in between is the interesting part. The community stopped fishing inside the park and, in little more than a decade, fish biomass multiplied more than fourfold. That figure turned Cabo Pulmo into an international case study, and it is what you see underwater: not scattered fish, but compact schools moving as a single animal.

The reef, and why it is unusual in this ocean

Cabo Pulmo's reef is hard coral, which is rare on the American Pacific coast, and it is estimated to be around 20,000 years old. Eight fingers of coral rock run parallel to the shore, at depths from a few metres to beyond twenty.

For diving that means structure: walls, channels and overhangs where life concentrates instead of spreading out. It is a reef you dive slowly, and it rewards looking into the gaps.

What you see, and what is not promised

The Cabo Pulmo postcard is the walls of jacks: thousands of fish turning in a column so dense it darkens the water. They show up at diving depth and at snorkelling depth too, which is why snorkelling here is not the consolation prize.

Schools of snapper and grunts are common, along with turtles and rays over the sand and whitetip reef sharks resting under the rocks. In the season when they move into the park, bull sharks.

Said plainly: the wildlife is wild and no sighting is guaranteed. Nor is a specific site, because sites are assigned day by day according to park availability and sea conditions. Anyone promising you an animal on a given date is selling you something else.

When to go: the best window, not the only one

From October to December the water is at its best: still warm from the summer, with high visibility. That is the window we recommend if you can pick your dates.

But Cabo Pulmo is dived year-round and we operate year-round. If your trip falls in March, June or September, there is still a departure: the water changes, the wildlife that moves through changes, the reef being there does not.

How you book with us, and who meets you there

We arrange and coordinate your trip with our partner team inside the National Park. You book with us, with the same care and the same terms as in Cancun, and in Cabo Pulmo you are met by the team that operates there every day of the year.

We say it this plainly on purpose: we would rather you knew exactly who is handing you the gear before you pay, not on the dock on the day.

The deposit on Cabo Pulmo trips is 20% and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. If the port closes or the weather prevents the activity, you are refunded in full.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where is Cabo Pulmo and how do you get there?

What is the best season to dive Cabo Pulmo?

Do I need a certification to dive Cabo Pulmo?

Can I choose which site to dive?
You can tell us your preferences, but we cannot promise them. Sites are assigned day by day according to park availability and sea conditions: it is a protected area and the capacity is not ours to manage.
How much does diving in Cabo Pulmo cost?
Two boat dives for certified divers cost US$189 per person, Discover Scuba with no certification US$209 and snorkelling US$89. All three include gear, guide, park access, water and a snack.
