A reef protected since 1998

Puerto Morelos Reef National Park has protected a stretch of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef since 1998, and you notice within the first minute underwater. There are visitor limits, mooring buoys so no boat ever anchors on coral, and an absolute ban on touching or removing anything.

The result is live coral cover you no longer find elsewhere on this coast, and a density of green turtles that makes sightings essentially routine.

What you dive here

The C-56 wreck is the headline: a former Mexican Navy minesweeper sunk under controlled conditions to create an artificial reef. Today it is a coral-covered structure with barracuda patrolling the deck and rays under the hull.

The National Park reef is the opposite: shallow, bright, with gentle currents and visibility that makes everything look closer. It is probably the best site on the coast for newly certified divers and for underwater photography.

We also run Discover Scuba Diving here: the reef lagoon is so sheltered the water is almost pool-like, ideal for a first dive.

Puerto Morelos versus Cancun

It is not that one is better — they are different dives.

Cancun has MUSA, more trip variety and the convenience of the Hotel Zone. Puerto Morelos has a healthier reef, far less boat traffic and calmer water inside the lagoon.

If you are diving several days, do both. If you only have one and the reef itself is what matters, come here.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Cancun to Puerto Morelos?
About 30 minutes by car from the Hotel Zone. We can quote transport if you need it.
Are the National Park fees included?
Yes. On all of our Puerto Morelos trips the National Park fees are included in the price.
Will I see turtles?
Very often. The Puerto Morelos reef is a green turtle feeding ground and sightings are common all year round.
Is it a good site if I just certified?
Probably the best on the coast: shallow depth, minimal current and high visibility let you focus on buoyancy and simply enjoy it.
