Bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen
Every winter, pregnant female bull sharks arrive in the shallow water off Playa del Carmen. Watching them pass a few metres away, behaving naturally and without bait, is one of the strongest experiences the Mexican Caribbean offers. We position on the sand, in line and still, and let them choose the distance.

How the day works, step by step
- Meeting point. La Martina Beach Club, Playa del Carmen.
- Extended briefing. Bull shark behaviour, group positioning, what to do and what not to do. This is the most important briefing of the day.
- Dive 1 · Observation. Descent to the sand flat (20–25 m). The group forms a line and stays still while the sharks circle.
- Surface interval. Interval on board and a debrief of what we saw.
- Dive 2 · Reef. Bright, shallow reef dive with turtles and coral life.
- Return. Back to port. Total duration around 4 hours.

Is bull shark diving dangerous?
Run by professional operators with clear protocols, it is a controlled activity. Bull sharks behave predictably at this site; the group stays still in formation and the guide maintains distance and order. The key is following the briefing exactly.
How does it differ from the feeding dive?
On the observation dive there is no bait: you watch the sharks behaving naturally, at a distance. On the feeding dive a specialist conducts a controlled feed under protocol, allowing a closer encounter — and it requires an Advanced certification.
Which months have bull sharks?
November to March. Outside those months the animals disperse and the activity is not offered.
