Best time to dive in Cancun: the year, month by month
The Mexican Caribbean has no diving season: it has wildlife seasons. What changes month to month is what you will see and how often the wind blows.
The short answer: you can dive all twelve months
The Mexican Caribbean does not have a diving season, it has wildlife seasons. Water sits between 25 and 29 °C all year, so a shorty is usually enough and there is never a month when you cannot get in.

May to September: whale sharks and flat seas
This is the whale shark window, when they gather off Isla Mujeres to feed. It is a surface snorkel, not a dive, and it does not depend on your certification: anyone can do it.
These are also the flattest months, with fewer northers and comfortable crossings to Cozumel. If your priority is visibility and a comfortable boat ride, this is your half of the year.
November to March: bull sharks and northers
Every winter, pregnant female bull sharks move inshore off Playa del Carmen. It is a documented seasonal phenomenon and one of the reasons divers travel here specifically in those months.
It is also norther season: wind fronts that build the sea for a day or two. They do not ruin a trip, but do not leave your only dive for the last day.
What happens when a norther comes in
A strong norther closes the exposed sites at Punta Cancun and complicates the Cozumel crossing. What we do that day is look at the wind in the morning and move the plan, not cancel it: the cenotes are perfect exactly when the sea is worst, because they are fresh water with no swell and no current.
That is why we publish no fixed site calendar. The call is made every morning with wind, current, swell and visibility on the table.
Cenotes have no season
Fresh water filtered through kilometres of limestone, at a constant temperature year round, no swell, no current, and visibility that in some systems passes forty metres.
If your trip falls in a windy month, or the wildlife you wanted is out of its window, the cenote is the alternative that never fails. It is not a plan B: for many divers it ends up being the best dive of the trip.
