For many, Cozumel is the best dive destination in Mexico and one of the top in the world. Its walls, jaw-dropping visibility and famous drift diving make it a must.
What makes Cozumel special?
It is part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world. Its crystal-clear waters, dizzying walls and coral gardens are home to turtles, eagle rays, nurse sharks and huge schools of fish.
What is drift diving?
It is diving while letting the current gently carry you along the reef. Instead of swimming, you float and glide effortlessly as the scenery passes by. It is relaxing, air-efficient and one of Cozumel's signatures.
Tip: the boat follows you on the surface and picks you up wherever you finish the dive, so there is no swimming back against the current.
Best reefs
- Palancar: the most famous; canyons, caves and spectacular formations.
- Santa Rosa Wall: a steep wall with giant sponges and abundant marine life.
- Colombia and Punta Sur: dramatic formations for experienced divers.
Requirements and tips
- Open Water certification and a recent dive (last 6 months).
- Good buoyancy control to enjoy the current.
- Minimum 2 people per trip.
