Every summer, hundreds of whale sharks gather off the coast of Cancún and Isla Mujeres to feed. Swimming next to the largest fish in the ocean is one of the most impressive experiences in the Mexican Caribbean, but picking the right date changes everything.
When is whale shark season?
The season runs from mid-May to mid-September. During these months the current concentrates plankton near the surface and whale sharks arrive to feed in calm waters off Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and Cancún.
Season month by month
- May (second half): start of season, fewer people and good sightings.
- June: excellent month; sightings increase.
- July and August: peak; maximum concentration and the best chance of a spectacular encounter.
- September (first half): season close, good days and fewer crowds.
What to expect
A trip lasts 5 to 6 hours: boat ride from Punta Sam Pier, time in the water snorkeling with the sharks and often reef snorkeling too. It is a snorkel activity, not diving: no certification required.
Is it safe?
Yes. The whale shark is a filter feeder and completely harmless. Trips run with certified guides, a mandatory life vest and under protected-area rules that limit the number of swimmers in the water.
Tips
- Book ahead: spots sell out in July and August.
- Use reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen.
- Take something for seasickness before departure.
- Bring a towel, a change of clothes and a waterproof camera.
Ready to experience it underwater?
