When is the season?
Bull shark season in Playa del Carmen runs from November to March, when pregnant females arrive in waters close to shore. It is a seasonal phenomenon and a unique chance to see them in their natural setting.
Observation vs. controlled feeding
- Observation + reef: you descend to a sandy area and watch the bull sharks in their natural behavior, with no direct interaction, followed by a reef dive.
- Controlled feeding: at greater depth, a specialist performs a feeding under strict protocols, allowing a closer, more intense encounter.
Respect first: both options run under professional protocols that prioritize safety and the animal's wellbeing.
Is it safe?
Yes, when done with professional operators. Bull sharks behave predictably on these dives and guides maintain distance and group order. The key is to follow the briefing, keep good buoyancy and respect instructions.

- Open Water certification (controlled feeding requires Advanced and good buoyancy control).
- Recent experience or a same-day refresh.
